Describe the Turkish Mediterranean
and you describe always a landscape in
which the mountains meet the sea. One
hour by modern road, inland from the
coast and you ascend to 1300 metres (4000
feet) and just ahead of you are mountains
with an altitude of 3000 metres (10.000
feet). Below the tree-line, and the winter
snow, are the yayla or highland plateaux
(vast agricultural plains famous for
their fruit and nut orchards). Falling
away from them; canyons, gorges and passes,
down which in Spring the melting snow
rushes.
Many of these gorges were important trade routes, some still in use,
some completely forgotten, though all at one time jealously guarded
by ancient civilisations whose income was largely the tolls they charged
for safe passage.
Akdag Hiking Country Ancient
roads, some little more than goat paths
with steps cut into the steep rock, abound,
tracing the route through beautiful scenery,
exotic wildlife and little known(if at
all) watch towers, tombs and settlements.
Nowadays Tourism is a professional discipline
on the coast but just inland, rarely
visited by the sun-seeking majority,
travellers are welcomed with a genuine
hospitality. Villagers who receive you
into their homes are more than willing
to share out not only their food but
their mattresses and blankets as well...
They do not necessarily expect anything
in return: their philosophy inspired
by the belief that visitors are sent
by God, and thus merit care and charity,
despite often having only a little to
spare.
The scenery is dramatic: extensive pine and
cedar forest, outcrops of juniper and plane and varied
maquis are topped by the impressive Ak Mountains;
snow-capped until June, thereafter turning a light
red until the Autumn snow.
Until recently the tracks between villages were for donkeys and pack-animals
and these tracks can still now be walked, describing meandering and
varied terrain instead of the direct vehicle roads which replaced them.
Whether your interests be in the steps of forgotten civilisations,
the geography and nature of a beautiful land or the attraction of unspoilt
village life this tour offers the opportunity to experience the diversity
of Lycian Turkey. Staying in one ideally situated coastal hotel, there
is an itinerary of excursions into the surrounding hills. There are
many alternatives to our set programme including local walks and boat
trips.
